Titanic is one of the most famous shipwrecks

The Titanic is one of the most famous shipwrecks in history, but its location and condition remain a mystery to many. A recent expedition to explore the sunken vessel has been cut short after one of the submersibles went missing.

According to AP News, the OceanGate Expeditions team was conducting a series of dives to document and study the Titanic using a specially designed submarine called Titan. The submersible can carry five people and withstand the immense pressure at the depth of 3,800 meters (12,467 feet) where the Titanic rests.

However, on the fourth dive of the planned 10-day mission, Titan failed to resurface after completing its scheduled six-hour dive. The crew on board the surface vessel, which was in constant communication with Titan, reported that they lost contact with the submersible shortly before it was supposed to ascend.

The OceanGate Expeditions team has launched a search and rescue operation to locate and recover Titan and its occupants. The team is using sonar, underwater drones and other equipment to scan the area around the Titanic for any signs of the missing submersible.

The cause of the incident is still unknown, but the team suspects that Titan may have encountered a technical malfunction or a collision with an underwater object. The team also said that there is enough oxygen and battery power on board Titan to sustain its crew for at least 72 hours.

The Titanic expedition was part of a larger project to create a 3D model of the shipwreck and monitor its deterioration over time. The OceanGate Expeditions team had planned to conduct six missions this year, each lasting 10 days and involving 40 dives.

The Titanic sank on April 15, 1912, after hitting an iceberg during its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York City. More than 1,500 people died in the disaster, which has captivated generations of explorers, historians and enthusiasts.
